Whether the list of pages are found in the root folder or another directory, does it affect Google’s function in finding the site pages?

In a tweet posted last week, John says it depends “on how they [the sitemaps] were discovered.” Furthermore, John goes on to say that one: If submitted via anonymous ping, they’re only valid there and lower levels. And two, if you submit them through your Search Console account, they can be valid for any verified site or part of a site.
